Safenook

“Safenook” is a “place based product” that aims to make placemaking a service to address social innovation. Safenook aims to address the tense relationship and perceived threats between two user groups in urban settings; students and unhoused individuals. This issue was prompted by observations of discomfort and fear experienced at urban parks at night, leading to a deeper understanding of the problematic social interactions between these groups. To address this gap and promote mutual respect and understanding, Safenook provides a service that combines spatial and safety design to create a safe and inclusive space for both the groups. The spatial design i.e. urban park features flexible furniture, designated spaces, and amenities supported by inclusive lighting and ambient music to foster a sense of community. Additionally, the space includes safety and security measures such as density monitoring cameras, visual displays, and on-site security personnel to ensure a safe environment for everyone. The safety design consists of a website platform where real-time monitoring maps and geo-fencing offer up-to-date information about these urban spaces. Users can access safety and inclusion information, and the platform allows them to provide feedback and report any issues they encounter. This combination of spatial and safety design seeks to transform urban spaces into safe and engaging environments, facilitating positive interactions and addressing social innovation challenges.
